Few things are as synonymous with the Eastern Shore of Maryland as chicken farms and small town fairs. Each summer since 1949 (with exception of 1984), the two have been combined all across the peninsula in the form of the Delmarva Chicken Festival. This yearly extravaganza aims at highlighting the importance of the poultry industry on the Shore through a common language locals and tourists all know and understand: mouth-watering food. The 64th edition of the annual festival appropriately comes to Byrd Park in Snow Hill, Maryland (just a 20 minute drive from Ocean City) June 21-22 for a celebration of all things chicken.
The Delmarva Chicken Festival is all about chicken. Lots of chicken. So much chicken, in fact, that the original world’s largest frying pan is imported to cook enough to feed the thousands of hungry guests. If you’ve never witnessed hundreds of breasts, thighs, wings, and drumsticks simmering simultaneously in hot oil in a frying pan built in the 1950s, this alone is worth the price of admission (which is free.) Vendors will be on hand selling funnel cakes, french fries, ice cream, and other staple fair foods.
Chicken may occupy the spotlight, but the Delmarva Chicken Festival offers much more than delicious local food favorites to those who attend. This year will feature an arts and crafts show, home and trade show, and custom car and truck show, as well as the Snow Hill Biddy Babes pageant, a 5K walk and run, scenic boat rides along the Pocomoke River, a performance by the Worcester County Children’s Theatre, and live music throughout the weekend from some of the region’s favorite acts, including The Volunteers, The Honeycombs, WW2unes, Alex and Shiloh, 33 1/3, and The Funsters. There will also be carnival rides, games, and interactive activities to keep the kids entertained, and if your thirst for knowledge is as great as your hunger for chicken, be sure to check out the educational exhibits and displays dedicated to the history of America’s favorite bird.
Whether you prefer white meat, dark meat, tenders, or nuggets, the Delmarva Chicken Festival is a poultry paradise that will tantalize your taste buds, a fun-filled fair for the whole family, and an educational experience that will change they way you look at dinner.
