21st Birthday Bash in OC

If you are in Ocean City this week, you may notice a couple of changes as you drive down Coastal Highway. The speed limit, normally 40 mph through North Ocean City, has been reduced to 30 mph, and Downtown, the speed limit has also been reduced. This is due to the expected, unauthorized H2Oi Pop-Up Rally.  It is reasonable to expect heavier than usual traffic, noise and strict enforcement of vehicle laws during the week and weekend.

What better place to celebrate a 21st birthday than a town with one of the hottest night lives in the country?  Ocean City, Maryland is known for their large number of bars that line Coastal Highway.  After recently celebrating my own milestone birthday, it is safe to say there is no where I would have rather experienced my special day than OC.

One of the major perks to night life in Ocean City, MD is the amount to do during the week.  Typically, Friday and Saturday nights are when everyone is out partying.  However, in OC there is never a dull night.

For instance, I turned 21 at midnight on a Monday, so my friends and I headed to Fager’s on 59th Street for their Monday night deck party.  Once inside, there was a DJ, dancing, and of course, drink specials.  The following night was a theme party at Macky’s on 54th Street.  Every Tuesday night Macky’s has a different theme and everyone dresses accordingly.  Some of the past themes include: Mardi Gras, Beer Fest, Toga, 80’s Party, Luau, Redneck Ball, Superhero, and more.  The night of my birthday, the theme was “anything but clothes.”  This meant that everyone covered up using the most creative materials.  Among the creativity and unusual outfits, there were girls wearing American flags and bartenders dressed in cases of beer.  Wednesday nights in OC are usually spent on 142nd Street at Harpoon Hanna’s.  All rail drinks are 50 cents and with a deal like that, Hanna’s is packed with people on Wednesday nights.  However, a friend recently informed me that a relatively new sports bar on 45th Street has the exact drink special every Wednesday.  So, after obtaining that information, we ventured to Spanky’s instead.

In addition to the night life, there are a variety of pool bars and other fun spots to visit during the day.  After driving past 49th Street every day and seeing the billboard that read “come lay on de rafts”, I simply had to go to Seacrets during the day on my birthday.  There was a DJ, rafts, tables, and a waitress all right there in the bay.  What more could I ask for?  If you’re looking for something more “low key” during the day, there are countless amounts of poolbars.  Just to name a few, there is the pool bar at the Holiday Inn, “Coconuts” at Castle in the Sand, “Manana Mode” at the Hilton, the pool bar at the Grand, “Party Block Pool Bar”, and “Bluefin” at the Caribbean Tidelands Hotel.  Not to mention, most of these pool bars have excellent happy hours.  For example, Coconuts has 2 for 1 drinks from 5pm to 6pm every day.

I spoke to both tourists and locals about celebrating their 21st birthday in OC and both seem to have the same unforgettable experience.  A University of Miami student, Michele Tsiknakis, came to visit Ocean City, MD to spend her 21st birthday.  At night, Michele went to Green Turtle, where she spent her night on the dance floor.  The following morning, she and her friends went to Peppers on 16th Street where they got the bloody mary bar to cure their hangovers from the night before.  When explaining her fun experience Michele said, “Celebrating my 21st birthday in Ocean City was a blast.  I want to do it again next year for my 22nd.”  Ian Tilghman, a local from Ocean City, celebrated his 21st birthday here in Ocean City as well.  He visited Peppers and Seacrets for his big day.  “It was great to finally experience the scene that I have always known about, the scene that is Ocean City, but for adults, was amazing,” Ian said.
