The category structure
From Ocean City Wiki
What is a Catgeory?
- Catgeories within wikis are a means of organizing pages of information into searchable lists for users. If I was writing on the history of the British Monarchy, my categories might be structured as periods of time. Categories help clarify structure and content within a given wiki.
What's the Category Structure of this wiki?
- The Ocean City wiki is based on a category structure that helps to guide and shape the entire wiki. It is designed to meet the specific needs of users, and is easily followed and adhered to by anyone who may choose to edit the wiki. Once in a category, the page will appear in a list when the user searches the wiki through the category structure.
- For an example, click on category:museums to get a full list of museums. Note that if a visitor wishes to explore all museum options in Ocean City, they can simply review that category. Yet since geographic areas are also categories (see full explanation below) users could just as easily seek to plan a day's itinerary in one specific, walkable area of Ocean City.
How the category structure can help you search the wiki
- When you use the search feature you can use multiple category names to find the overlap you are looking for. For example, enter two names of categories such as 'North Ocean City' and 'restaurants' in order to find a restaurant in the location you are planning your day in. You can also search something like 'events' and 'kid friendly' in order to plan the ideal trip for a younger family.
How to insert a category into a page
- The category is inserted into the page in the editing phase by typing into double brackets, the word category, a colon, and then the actual specific category name. The wiki is sensitive to lower case and capital letters and to spaces as well, so it is important to type the precise structure.
- For example, if one was adding a new restaurant to the wiki, at the bottom of the page, below the text, while still in the editing stage, one would write: [[category:restaurants]]. This will then result in a category section which will appear in the upper-right corner of the page.
Are there limits or guidelines for the number and type of categories to put on each page?
- Any given page of information can have many different categories associated with it. Each business should be listed in a minimum of two categories - one for the type of business and one for its location within Ocean City.
- An example of a page with many categorical relationships is the page for the Ocean City Boardwalk which is categorized in multiple geographic regions, and includes a huge range of activities, locations and accomidations.
- All establishments will have a minimum of two categories - one for the services offered and the other for its geographic location.
- For example when you go to the Ocean City restaurant, La Hacienda you will see two categories: Restaurants and Route 90 Area.
- The six Geographic Categories for Ocean City are: North OC (124th St. and Up), Condo Row (96th St. to 123rd St.), Rt. 90 Area (64th St. to 95th St.)(Category:Route_90_Area), Midtown (28th St. to 63rd. St.), Upper Boardwalk (13th St. to 27th St.), Lower Boardwalk (12th St. and West OC). See a map of the area to help you classify your posts appropriately.
