Description

Furnace Town is a reconstructed 19th century iron manufacturing village. The village was established in 1829 around the Nassawango Iron Furnace, a major source of pig iron. While the furnace thrived, the village grew to include 300 people, including a variety of craftspeople and artisans. Unfortunately, in 1850 the village went bankrupt when a better iron source was found elsewhere in the region.

Today, the village has been re-constructed to give visitors an idea of what it was like in the 19th century. Tourists can see artisan interpreters, nature trails and walks, eleven historic exhibit buildings, and archaeology digs. Events include County Fair in Aug. and Celtic Festival in Oct.

The museum itself includes exhibits on the history of the town and the furnace itself, as well as the industrial processes that took place there, and the archaeological research used to restore the village. Visitors can examine real artifacts from the history of the town.

The Museum Store offers the work of the town's artisan exhibitors, as well as books related to the town's history.
