Trimper Rides and Amusements: Not Just Fun For Kids

Since I was a child, I can always remember going to the Ocean City boardwalk to ride the rides at Trimper Rides and Amusements.  In fact, I’m sure many that frequent the Ocean City area in the summertime are familiar with memories of riding rides at Trimper’s.  Trimper Rides and Amusements is located at the South end of the Ocean City boardwalk at the inlet, you can’t miss it, the huge rollercoaster is a give away that you’ve come to the right place!  Some link the popular amusement park to childhood, therefore believing that it’s just for kids.  But it’s not!  People of all ages can enjoy the rides at Trimper’s!

Trimper Rides and Amusements is over 100 years old and has been popular among many locals and tourists ever since it’s opening in 1890.  Daniel B. Trimper and his wife, Margaret, opened the park shortly after arriving in Ocean City in 1890.  The amusement park has two areas for riding rides, an indoor section and an outdoor section.

I always remember begging my sister to ride the roller coaster, which is actually called the Tidal Wave (what better name for a rollercoaster at the beach)? She was always too afraid to ride it, and to be honest I always had my reservations about it as well, but once I felt the rush of the first drop, I was ready to ride it again and again.

To ride the carousel when it originally opened it would only cost you a nickel!  Now, 100 years later, it costs roughly two dollars.  The carousel doesn’t just have horses you can ride; there are actually many different animals one can choose from.  There are cats, dogs, lions, deer, ostriches, frogs, the list goes on; you just have to come to Trimper’s yourself and decide which is your favorite to ride!  I personally prefer the ostrich!

Over the years many more rides have been added, for instance the Tidal Wave, which I mentioned earlier, was purchased in 1985 thus adding more screams and laughter to the outdoor section of the park. The rollercoaster includes two very thrilling loops.  But here’s the kicker about this thrilling ride, you don’t just experience these loops once, you get to experience them a second time…backwards!  As I said before, I’ve had my reservations about it, and I still do, but once you get it out of the way, you’ll be begging for more!

There are many more rides to enjoy at Trimper Rides and Amusements in Ocean City that are fun for all ages. The Haunted House is a fun ride for everyone. It’s the home of Count Wolf Von Vinderstein, and he is going to give you the grand tour as you ride along in a coffin!
There is also the Himalaya, which provides the experience of sledding at top speed through the Himalayas forward as well as backward.

An interview with Ocean City’s biggest Haunted House fan

The Trimper’s Haunted House at the south end of the Boardwalk is as iconic as the teeth-barring bat that adorns the ride’s second story. For over five decades, kids and adults alike have fallen in love with the Ocean City Haunted House (OCHH)’s neon-painted walls, kitschy stunts and decapitated Count Wolf Von Vinderstein who guards the ride’s entry.

And how can I leave out the Freakout? To this day, the Freakout is quite possibly my friends’ favorite ride as well as my own, favorite ride!  It swings you high into the air numerous times all while spinning!  You can’t ride it just once!
While there is much more to experience in the thrill seeking department at Trimper’s, there are also tamer rides if that’s what you prefer. The Mirror Maze is always fun when you need a break from action-filled rides.
Just make sure you put your hands out in front of you as you walk through this glass walled room, or else you might run into a hidden wall!  There is also Aladdin’s Lamp, a walk-through funhouse filled with magic carpets and genies.  Be careful where you step though, there are moving floors and tricky bridges to cross as you travel on your journey.
And there is always the classic Ferris Wheel.  I don’t know about you, but I always rode the Ferris Wheel in hopes that my seat would stop at the very top so that I could look out over the whole amusement park and see the enormous crowd gathering to ride all these awesome rides!
Each ride in the park takes a certain amount of tickets.  Tickets can be purchased throughout the park in numerous locations, whether you are indoors or outdoors.  Single tickets are fifty cents apiece.  You can also purchase a sheet of 40 tickets for $18, or you can buy a wristband for $23, which gives you unlimited riding access!
As you can see, Trimper Rides and Amusements isn’t just for kids; it’s fun for anyone!  So whether you’re two, or ninety-two, there is always fun and excitement to be found at Trimper’s in Ocean City!
