TerraCycling starts in Berlin

Grow Berlin Green is a campaign dedicated to encouraging our community and surrounding areas to protect our local eco-systems, conserve our resources, and build our cities using safe, smart practices. The goal of the organization is to promote the preservation of Maryland’s natural resources. Our ocean, bay, marshes, rivers, creeks, and any other waterway depend on the help and support of like-minded, Earth-loving individuals.

Starting today, Friday, September 10th, the town of Berlin will be initiating a new TerraCycle program to their standard recycling program. TerraCycle is a company that makes affordable, eco-friendly products from a wide range of different non-recyclable waste matters. This company runs a free national collection program that pays non-profits for their waste.

Berlin town officials have generously agreed to place two containers for TerraCycling next to the current town recycling containers. The TerraCycling bins will be located at the John Howard Burbage Park on William Street.

The typically non-recyclable trash items at TerraCycling collects include corks, chip bags, cookie wrappers, juice pouches and coffee packs. When reused properly these items can be made into coolers, trash cans, pavers, bricks or fence posts.

The following items can be placed inside the TerraCycling bins:
-Drink pouches
-Yogurt cups
-Candy wrappers
-Cookie wrappers
-Chip bags
-Energy bar wrappers
-Toasted chip bags
-Bear Naked wrappers
-Kashi packaging
-Plastic wrappers
-Toothpaste tubes
-Toothbrushes
-Diaper wrappers
-Personal product wrappers
-Aveeno tubes
-Scotch tape dispensers
-Corks
-Spread containers
-Lunchable lunch kits

Grow Berlin Green is managed by a strong team of experienced local environmentalists. Members from the Assateague Coastal Trust (ACT), the Lower Shore Land Trust (LSLT) and the Maryland Coastal Bays Program (MCBP), and local citizens are active in the program.

With the Grow Berlin Green initiative, hopefully Berlin can be used as a model to other communities in the Delmarva area. Help improve our natural resources, reduce waste, increase recycling, and make the Ocean City area more Earth-friendly so we can enjoy our waterways and land now and forever. Keep saving and separating your trash for the TerraCycling program!
