Restaurants from the Ocean City area can enter their hot wing recipes in the second annual Kickin’ Wing Fling contest at the Marina Deck Restaurant on Sunday, June 30.
Local celebrity judges and the public will sample wings from each participating restaurant at the Dorchester Street restaurant event. Judges will include DJ Wax, DJ Billy T and JJ from 93.5 The Beach. They will cast their vote for the most original wing. The public will choose the best overall wing.
“This is just a cool thing and everybody loves hot wings,” said Nicole Hills, Web site manager for www.oceancityhappyhours.com with Jeremy Brink. “Since we’re a happy hour Web site, wings just seem to fit.”
The event is hosted by www.oceancityhappyhours.com, which brings together happy hour information from local restaurants, and 10 percent of the proceeds will benefit Diakonia. The West Ocean City organization provides shelter, food, clothing and resources to individuals and families in Worchester County and on the Lower Shore.
“Last year we partnered with the humane society and we just wanted to do something else again that helped others,” said Hills.
The winners of the most original wing and the best overall wing will earn, Hills said, bragging rights and receive a five-foot banner. Registration, through www.oceancityhappyhours.com, is open and Hills said about 18 restaurants have signed up as of Tuesday, including JC’s Northside Pub, Seacrets, The Original Green Turtle, 19th Hole, 45th Street Taphouse and Grotto’s Pizza.
“The restaurants really get the biggest and fattest wings for the contest,” Hills said. “They choose recipes from their menu for the best overall category so you can go there and actually order them. Last year we had the craziest wings.”
Hills said the Cork Bar and Grill, on Wicomico Street, won the public vote last year and the Hawaiian Crab Bar and Grill won the judges vote with their peanut butter and jelly wings.
Hills said approximately 400 guests attended the event last year and even more are expected this year. The cost for guests 21 and over is $12, which includes one beer and a sample of wings from each restaurant. The cost for anyone under 21 is $10.
The contest will take place from 1-4 p.m. Restaurants can register for the contest through www.oceancityhappyhours
.com or by e-mailing Jeremy@oceancityhappyhours.com. For more information, call the Marina Deck at 410-289-4411.
