The weather has finally decided enough’s enough with playing hard to get, and so the 60 degree days we were given at the tail end of Autumn are a distant, fond memory. But now that it’s officially Winter, there’s no point in letting the cold keep you indoors. The true adventurers among us know that Thrasher’s is open year round. Call it a local Christmas miracle (that and the fact that no one will judge you for buying bulk at the Candy Kitchen — just say it’s for the kids’ stockings and no one will be the wiser). Here are some fun things to do this week if you’re headed out!
-The Winterfest lights have officially been lit, so from now until January 3rd, you can pack up the whole family and head to Northside Park to see more than a million (seriously!) sparkling lights. Considering admission is only $5 (and free for children under 12), that’s a lot of
bang sparkle for your buck. While you’re at it, grab some hot chocolate and say ‘hello’ to Santa for me.
-If you’re looking for something a little more adult, the Casino at Ocean Downs is currently holding a charitable event for the Diakonia Shelter & Food Pantry. Bringing in a canned good or non-perishable food item gets you a spin on the casino’s prize wheel, and you could win 5 to 10 Slot Dollars. Not only will you get to have a little fun, but I bet you’ll be on the Nice list this year for it, too.
-Casinos might not be your style, so if you like it slow and easy, head over to Snow Hill library on Monday, December 7th at 2 p.m. to listen to some classic holiday music with the WW Tunes!
-Once the WW Tunes have you brimming with holiday cheer, you can visit Ocean City library at 2 p.m. on the 8th to learn the ancient, cultivated art of baking gingerbread cookies. But not just any gingerbread cookies – Williamsburg’s Raleigh Tavern gingerbread cookies! Nothing goes good with cookies like a little American history, that’s what Ma always said.
-Around the holidays, the littlest among us can get antsy with all this waiting around for Santa Claus. Seriously, do we really have an entire month left? Calm their tiny, frayed nerves by taking them to the Young & Restless ‘Reindeer Games’ on Dec. 10th! 10:30 a.m. at Snow Hill library, they’ll be treated to science, art, music, and games centered around the holiday season. I’ve been told the rule
is “dress to get messy,” so it’s bound to be an exciting time. Just make sure you put a little coal on your nose to hide that red glow, otherwise they might not let you join in (disclaimer: this is a Rudolph joke; I’m sure they love all sorts of noses over at Snow Hill library).
For the artistically inclined
Of course, with all the beauty the area holds this time of year, sometimes it’s nice just to take a walk, breathe in the crisp, fresh air, and behold everything our amazing little area has to offer. If you’re artistically inclined, the folks over at Frontier Town have given you more incentive to do just that with a photography contest! So bust out the DSLR (or maybe just a nice camera phone). Who knows what sites you might find?
If you’re not the artist type, sometimes a walk can just be a walk. It’s enough to enjoy the world around you, isn’t it? At least if you love Ocean City as much as I do! So make sure to head over to our , sign up for our newsletter, and follow us on our social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest) for more updates on the goings-on of our wonderful city!
