Tri-county agencies offer assistance to homeless
(Feb. 8, 2013) Financial assistance is available for eligible people to get birth certificates or state identification cards through the “Homeless ID Project.”
The Core Service Agencies of Worcester, Somerset and Wicomico counties provide assistance to people at risk of being homeless, and who have a mental illness or substance abuse disorder.
Another program, SSI/SSDI Outreach Access and Recovery speeds up disability social security claims. The program is designed to have a decision for disability claims within 90 days.
Information about SOAR and the Home-
less ID Project is available at Worcester County Core Service Agency by calling 410-632-3366 or by calling the Somerset-Wicomico Core Service Agency at 410-543-6981.
These projects help people in the tri-county area on their road to recovery and treatment. Identification cards are needed to access a number of services, entitlements and medical insurance.
About a quarter of the homeless population in the United States suffers from some form of severe mental illness, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Mental illness can disrupt a person’s ability to handle daily tasks. Treatment services are available through the mental health programs of the local health departments. Call your health department to find out more.
