Re: OC smoke free in 2011?

Not a chance second hand smoke is a harmful factor on the beach.

Re: OC smoke free in 2011?

I don't seem to smell smoke on the beach so much. We had a couple of girls smoking right behind us one day and I never smelled it. Maybe it was the location. I don't see many butts on the beach either. On the boardwalk is a different story. Several times I had someone blow smoke out as I was walking past them. I would rather see smoking on the boardwalk banned then on the beach. I quit smoking 4 years ago and have never missed it, if fact I find it repulsive now but you should be able to smoke outside.

Dean, other people enjoy smoking while smelling the salt air. I know when I smoked I enjoyed sitting on the beach early in the a.m. and having a cigerette while watching the waves.

Don't get me started on spitting. I saw so many people spitting on the boardwalk this year. Gross!

Dean, I can't believe no one commented on your last closing words...no not the miss-spelling of people. LOL

As for smoking..as a non-smoker I agree that there will never be total agreement on the issue. I rarely smell smoke on the beach except for the stench of a cigar (which can be very offensive). Compromise may be the answer. As dumb as it sounds so did the rotating surfer beaches years ago....rotating smoking beaches. If smokers are somewhat considerate they can smoke all they want but many of them are just plain rude...like cell phone users....but that is for another forum.

    Less government...commonsense.

I think this is the best thing that could happen. My daughter has asthma and I can't tell you how many times we had move to a different location or leave the beach because we could not find a space where no one was smoking. My children have also been burned on the boardwalk by cigarettes while sitting in their strollers so it would be wonderful if the boardwalk were included. I will definitely welcome this change and only wish it came about when my children were still small. Hopefully, it will be inplemented by the time my grandchildren are playing on the beach. We all deserve to breath clean air.

Re: OC smoke free in 2011?

I am a non smoker but I do smoke cigars and have done so at the beach. My parents do smoke cigarettes everywhere they legally can including the beach. This past week some around us smokied cigarettes as well. I actually hate the smell of cigarettes cheap nasty tobacco. If someone right next to us complained about the smoke I would have clipped off the flame part and saved it for another time.

Like I said cigarette smoke is gross and unhealthy we know. The biggest issue on the boards that I see are people that hold lit cigarettes down low (to keep the smoke away from them) in the area of kids faces. I have pointed this out to some in the past when my kids have been involved. The litter is another issue. The world is an ashtray to some, that too is rude and selfish.

Deans comment reminded me of a Hillary Clinton t shirt I saw involving Hillary a tree and music. Play nice everyone we are friends.

    Brian, I WAS playing nice.

I said I was done on this subject and I meant it!

HOWEVER- if you have time look back through this thread, I started this discussion and plainly stated my stance on it, Terp, disagreed with me, and was concerned about the cost, I came back to point out that in Bethany beach fines are issued which takes care of the cost (everything very friendly) Z, came out and took a hard stance against it, and commented about the safety of the kids being an issue - seeing that we were on to oppisite sides of the spectrum here I offered an olive branch type of reply, saying that I too would like the kids safe in the water, AND still be smoke free - in other words I want what you want but I'd still feel that my belief holds water too. This was still very light hearted on my part, and this was indicated by me starting my post out with an "LOL
", which most people would interpret as a friendly discussion, I might not agree with ya but no sense making it personal... Well, all that changed at the top of page 2 where Z, decided to make it personal by calling me an "idiot"! - I questioned her on it, (never got an apology) I turned the other cheek and posted facts on second hand smoke in reply to a post from OCMike (which again I started out friendly telling him I like his posts on this board) - not even in the direct discussion Z, AGAIN makes it personal by attacking my parents! ARE YOU KIDDING ME????????? I mean enough is enough here. ONLY then did I make a personal comment back at her. Now whether you agree or disagree on the smoking situation is irrelevant. I think it should be crystal clear who the aggressor was in this fight, and who MADE it personal. and, it was NOT me! Truth be told I thought I showed pretty good restraint up until the end.

    DONE!

I don't think that smoke free would be a good idea.. I feel that Ocean City would lose a lot of vacationers as did many other establishments did when this law wet into effect... I believe that non smoking rooms are appropriate but I do not see the harm in people smoking outside on their balconies or on the boardwalk or at the beach ot pools.. The smoker is outdoors and the smoke is not harming anyone.. Ocean city gets a lot of young college kids who I feel would break the non smoking law.. Leave Ocean City as it is.. It is a fun enjoyable place to vaction just as it is now.

A person with asthma or any other respiratory problems would not be affected by someone smoking outside on the beach or boardwalk... they are breathing in more than cigarette smoke outside... I have copd and I can say that people smoking on the beach or boardwalk does not effect me.. that is ridulous and just a statement of someone who is against smoking altogether. If the beach and boardwalk were fulkl of non smokers only..there would hardly be anyone there..

    Oh really?

Now, Stanford University researchers have conducted the first in-depth study on how smoking affects air quality at sidewalk cafés, park benches and other outdoor locations. Writing in the May issue of the Journal of the Air and Waste Management Association (JAWMA), the Stanford team concluded that a non-smoker sitting a few feet downwind from a smoldering cigarette is likely to be exposed to substantial levels of contaminated air for brief periods of time.

"Some folks have expressed the opinion that exposure to outdoor tobacco smoke is insignificant, because it dissipates quickly into the air," said Neil Klepeis, assistant professor (consulting) of civil and environmental engineering at Stanford and lead author of the study. "But our findings show that a person sitting or standing next to a smoker outdoors can breathe in wisps of smoke that are many times more concentrated than normal background air pollution levels."

Klepeis pointed to the 2006 Surgeon General's report, which found that even brief exposures to secondhand smoke may have adverse effects on the heart and respiratory systems and increase the severity of asthma attacks, especially in children.

"We were surprised to discover that being within a few feet of a smoker outdoors may expose you to air pollution levels that are comparable, on average, to indoor levels that we measured in previous studies of homes and taverns," said Wayne Ott, professor (consulting) of civil and environmental engineering at Stanford and co-author of the JAWMA study. "For example, if you're at a sidewalk café, and you sit within 18 inches of a person who smokes two cigarettes over the course of an hour, your exposure to secondhand smoke could be the same as if you sat one hour inside a tavern with smokers. Based on our findings, a child in close proximity to adult smokers at a backyard party also could receive substantial exposure to secondhand smoke."

Nice try uwish. I stand by my statement there is no chance you would be harmfully affected by someone smoking 10-15 away from you on the beach.
