More than one angler could have helped to land the fish which is against the rules. This is what happened last year or the year before, I can't remember. Not sure if it's just the top prize fish angler or all the anglers that place in the money, but they are required to pass lie detector tests before receiving the money.

Yeah, they do the lie detector the day after the last weigh in.

When the BIG money is out there; cheating is definitely within reason and does happen.

Yeah that lawsuit was the 2007 tournament and tied up in the courts for a year, it was a mess.

That current winning blue marlin is only the second fish, in the history of the open, to top 1000 pounds. The leading white is a record of sorts asd well, and caught by a local. I love it when a local wins the tourney.

    Here's the official rule:

"A fish may be hooked by anyone other than the angler (Captain, Mate or other registered angler) however the fishing rod must be transferred immediately to the angler after hookup. The angler, from that time on, shall fight the fish alone until boated or released."

Once the angler gets the fish up next to the boat, then they can receive help to get it onto the boat.

Why is it that only an angler can reel the fish in?

I am surprised by the official rule...I thought that the person who originally hooked the fish needed to "land" or at least get it boatside before assistance was given (due to size and weight) , to be recognized as a "valid" catch in a competition. Thanks for the info, Mink.

I think they are all using circle hooks too, a little more challanging to hook. A new requirement of the last year or two. I am fairly certain the mate or someone else can touch the leader, which is the first 10 feet or so of line from the hook. And of course someone other then the angler needs to gaff and bring into the boat. During the fight no one but the angler can touch any part of the rod or reel or line itself, automatic disqualification.

I have caught 70-80# yellowfin tuna on 80# line, talk about a fight. Had serious muscle burn in forearms and bicep. I can't imagine a 1/2 ton beast on the other end of the line. It must have taken hours would be my guess. So yeah, a lot of temptation to cheat when you are in a physical battle that could last hours.
