    v w audi car rally

    UUggghhh just read that the car rally will be in town again during Sunfest!! Does this bother anyone else or just me?? Kinda selfish I know, I'm sure business is good for town, but can't they hold it a different weekend?? really confuses things, traffic is horrendous, they are noisy and hog up all the parking spots!! Been coming to Sunfest since 92' and it always was so leisurely and fun. Two yrs ago when they were in town took us 30+ mins to get back across 50 from Outback!! And we stay right on 1st street!! Guess I'm just an old stick in the mud change really does bother me! Been so use to having the town all to ourselves all these years it's hard to share!!

    Im a total car nut, but I myself cannot stand h2oi or whatever it's called. VW's are such junk and it really makes me laugh when i see all the money they put into these terds. Why do they put vulger crap all over their cars in painters tape? Why do they put wide tires that stick out and rub the wheel wells? Why do most of the men wear makeup? The fart cans sound great too. I Hear VA beach loves vw's HINT HINT!

    I'm sure this is the same crowd but last year they had several dozen VW Camper Van's at Assateague. The people we encountered were just as down to earth and wonderful to be around as you could imagine. Mostly middle aged ex-hippy types but they really enjoyed the time they had.

    I'm going to chime in here as well. I am a car person. Every year we go to OC for the May cruise in show and again in October for the Corvette show. When we first started going to the Corvette show it was the last weekend of Sept/first weekend of October during Wine Fest. It was nice and not overly crowded. Then the city added Harbor Days the same weekend as Wine Fest and a couple other events so the Vettes got pushed back to the second weekend of October. The city apparently is the one who decides when these car shows are to go on in OC. I think that NO car shows or motorcycle shows should go on during big events like Sunfest or Springfest. I know car people. And all of them like to rev their engines, peel out, and many of the younger, ricer set like to raise major heck. I just don't understand the city's reasoning here if this is an event that is held in Ocean City. Or is it just an event outside of OC and they filter into OC? Either way, it's just bad timing all around and even being a car person, I'm siding with everyone here who is against it.

    Z, I agree with your point.

    I don't think the VW show is an event sanctioned by the city like those other events, so I suspect the city has no control over its dates. The other events get permits, often a year or more in advance to use the inlet parking lot and have parades on the boards. I think the VW show mostly gathered at locations in West OC and in local business parking lots. For a few years they rallied at Ocean Downs (now Ocean Casino), and it looks like they are back there this year.

    They always litter the town, literally litter. I am talking napkins, straw wrappers, cups, pizza boxes, cig packs what ever and just throw it out on the ground. Most disrespectful event group that comes to town. Don't get me wrong I apreciate their business when they spend their money in town, and some are cool and polite. As a whole I wish they had a little more class and a lot less hella flush.

    Anyone remember this gem? Below is what I am reminded of when they visit.

    News story;

    BERLIN - Maryland State Police arrested an alleged intoxicated driver Sunday evening after police say the man a participant in the weekend car show drove his Audi multiple times around Ocean Downs Racetrack horse practice track before ripping through the parking lot and onto Route 50.

    At 5:05 p.m., a trooper monitoring departing vehicles at the racetrack noticed a car driving on the practice track. When the trooper approached in his vehicle from outside the track, the driver, Cort Bennett Sikes, 24, of Austin, Texas, piloted his car to the far end of the track. The trooper later drove his vehicle onto the track as well, only to have the suspect once again keep the center of the track between himself and the officer patrol car, police said.

    Sikes then exited the track and sped through the crowded parking lot to the far end of the grounds, adjacent to the stables. After an abrupt turn, Sikes hit several grassy mounds and bottomed out, losing the cars front bumper, police said.

    The car eventually made its way past the crowds many spectators having to move to avoid the vehicle and out onto Route 589 and then westbound Route 50. The driver passed several vehicles on the shoulder and lost a left tire in the process.

    Another officer stopped traffic near Sunset Memorial Cemetery, forcing the fleeing vehicle to get stuck on the median, police said.

    Police arrested the Austin man, documenting a variety of symptoms of excessive alcohol consumption in police reports. Sikes refused breath tests, police said.
    Sikes is being held on $5,000 bond in the Worcester County Detention Center and as of Sunday night had not posted his bond.

    Sounds like OC needs to up their police presence during this event like they do for Cruisin OC. You can't even burp without getting a ticket then. I've seen the bicycle police pull over huge pickups during Cruisin. But I have a problem with all of the pick up trucks that show up now for the May event too. It used to be when we first started coming for Cruisin that the people with the old cars used to "cruise" the strip. We'd take our folding chairs and sit on the sidewalks and watch all the cars. And when I say cruise, I mean slow cruising up and down Coastal Highway. Then about 3 or 4 years ago, these kids in pickup trucks started showing up and showing off and it ruined the cruising. I've seen as many as a dozen kids piled in the beds of the trucks and they yell at people sitting along the sidewalks, and throw beer cans, etc. Now we just don't bother sitting out. We'll see how it goes next month.

    and then you have the d-bags in the lifted trucks with exhaust pipes coming out of the bed of the truck shooting black clouds of diesel exhaust over people sitting on the side of the road....

    Talk about loud and obnoxious, let's not forget about those ridiculously loud motorcycles that come around for almost two full weeks in September. Do the majority of those bikes really have to be that loud???? There should be a law against it. "Loud pipes save lives" my a$$...
