Something that I would change about Ocean City would be handicapped/wheelchair accessibility in and around Ocean City. Being a paraplegic and using a wheelchair to get around, I find it difficult and disheartening at times, as to what people think is "handicapped accessible". things like curb cuts, ramps into places (and not making them to high of an angle to go up or come down), width of doorways. Another thing would be that places to stay that list their building is "handicapped accessible". It would be more informative if they would list how many units/rooms etc that are handicapped accessible, dimensions of rooms/bathrooms of said units. Another one would be ramp heights to/from the boardwalk.

No smoking in public areas! Please don't get upset, it's just that I am one of the 16% of the population allergic to the stuff in cigarette smoke. Used to be out in smoke all of the time, and don't care if people smoke, but now, can't go to the boardwalk, because it's everywhere. Or maybe just make it so smoking areas were in few specic area going along the boards so I could avoid them easier.

That is so true! I had a brother in law who was wheelchair bound and it amazes me how insensitive people are to your needs. Handicapped rooms in a lot of hotels just means bars in the bathroom! What about wheelchair accessable showers? True handrails on the toilets? Sinks that you can roll under? And balconies that you can actually wheel out onto without help?

That's just the hotels! How about all the obstacles in restaurants and other public places? There are a few hotels though that DO actually have wheelchair accessable rooms. But only a few.

OH, and let's not forget those insensitive JERKS that park in the handicapped spots because they don't want their car to get wet, etc.

Z06RL, you'll love (note sarcasm) this post i made from another account about the paradise plaza back in 03 when I stayed there.bar74TenderfootJoined: 03/01/2003Posts: 3Sand Dollars: 5
Well dont stay at the paradise plaza inn on 9th street and the boardwalk. I had an absolutely miserable time. The wheel-in shower is sloped the wrong way, and if you didn't have towels sandbagged against the shower when running, the water would run all over the bathroom. The grab rail is on the wrong side if you are in a wheelchair. The tile floor gritty and slippery to get any traction on crutch tips. To top off my trip from hell (and the last time I ever visit ocean city, when I asked the front desk/security about having 2 motorcycles that were illegally parked in the handicapped parking spot: 1) the security guard put them there, and 2) WASN'T moving them cause as he said "no one has ever complained about vehicles illegally parked in the handicapped spots before"

Gees, this is horrible. Perhaps the City could look into this, they squabble about all kinds of silly stuff, removing the Recycling Program, perhaps they should spend some time on here reading about the city from an outsiders point of view. I am going to look at my business from this perspective and just see if I am a good business owner. My front counter and front door are accessible, but I do not have public restrooms, as I do not offer sit down and therefore am not required to offer restrooms other than for the employees. However, if one asks we escort them back to the restroom. Perhaps those that require these accomodations are best to stay at known franchise hotels, I am sure they are more global and will provide accomodations. Hyatt, Court Yard by Marriott, Holiday Inn, just to name a few.
