Situated on the coast of Ocean City, Maryland, Dunes Manor Hotel offers impeccable views of the Atlantic Ocean. All the rooms are oceanfront, too. And since the hotel is open year-round, guests can watch the seasons affect the ocean. Below, you’ll find details on the restaurants, rooms, and traditions Dunes Manor can offer. But first, we’ll hear from Vicki Morris, General Manager at Dunes Manor.
“Lots of us have been here a long time,” Morris starts, “I’ve been here 25 years.” And with the touching history of the hotel, it’s no wonder the staff want to stay.
It all started with a dream shared by the Conners. The couple had already established Dunes Manor Motel–Dunes Manor Hotel’s sister property–but they dreamed of a full service establishment. “It used to be that you stayed at a hotel and ate there too,” Morris says. On top of that, Thelma Connor liked the Victorian touch. “We have long porches and rockers now,” Morris says.
With family assistance, Thelma Conner finally opened Dunes Manor Hotel in 1987–25 years ago. Unfortunately, Thelma’s husband passed before he could see the dream of opening a hotel come to fruition. Nonetheless, Thelma pressed on and even joked about opening the hotel on April Fool’s Day. When there was backlash, she took on the ‘I’ll show them’ attitude. And she showed them, indeed.
Thelma instituted the afternoon tea tradition that Dunes Manor Hotel holds so dear. “It brings everyone together,” Morris says, “and it’s almost like seeing family for those who come year after year.” The staff, like Morris, attend and work the tea time. “It’s nice to get away from our desks,” she says. Even Thelma got involved in serving the tea. Morris relayed one story where a guest was surprised to learn Velma owned the hotel and served the tea. “She said she would haunt us if we didn’t continue the afternoon tea,” Morris jokes.
Though both Conners passed, their daughters are now involved in the business. It’s good to know that such a beautiful history driven by a dream can be preserved and continued by other Conners.
Maintaining a Victorian theme is central to the hotel. From the moment you walk through the glass entrance doors, you are transported into a the late 1800s. The light colors and cascading staircases make the lobby feel warm and inviting. The staff keeps the Victorian vibe in the lobby by offering tea in silver serving ware. To accompany the tea, crumpets and cookies are also displayed on the table. This long-forgotten tradition is not only enchanting, but also delicious. Essentially, there is everything necessary for a short while in 19th century England.
Dunes Manor also has a wonderful restaurant, and like the rooms, the restaurant faces the ocean. For breakfast, guests can order standard breakfast foods or venture out with flounder and eggs, cream chipped beef, or a bagel topped with lox. Lunch time brings favorites like shrimp salad, brie, ham & apple sandwich, creamy crab dip, and stuffed potato skins. At dinner, Dunes Manor serves up elegance through seafood dishes, steak, and ribs. There is also a wide variety of wines, spirits, and beers available. What’s the name of this enticing restaurant? Naturally, it’s entitled The Victorian Room.
In the warmer months, guests can enjoy ocean breezes while they munch on food from Milton’s Cafe. This cafe serves lite fare, and the three other meals. Another food place in the hotel, Zippy Lewis Lounge, serves lite fare until 10 p.m. Thelma made it easy for others to adhere to her dream of eating in the hotel with so many choices!
