What is up with the Tip Jars everywhere? I have seen them in the past years...but now they seem to be everywhere. I know they dont get paid the best,,,,but come on now... People on vacation spend enough $$$. without having to Tip for a carryout soda or ice cream.

Yeah, and sometimes I wonder....why should I tip when I couldnt understand them in the first place. I have nothing against foreigners, but some should learn our language better. IMO.

Tips jars are a way for Excellent customer service workers to earn a bit more than the hourly wage. I work in an ice cream shop outside of my real day job and tips supplement the lower wage. I don't expect anyone to tip who has gotten excellent customer service. Many folks like the chance to reward those of us that go the extra mile for customers beyond just fetching a soda. :) Keep in mind they are totally voluntary and there are no hard feelings if you dont participate. Most of us just want to make sure you have the best experience possible, not squeeze every penny out of you. :)

Oh, i know it isnt "necessary" to drop somethng in the jar.. I waitress parttime,,,so i know all about tips....but i feel a waiter/waitress seem to work alot harder than someone just getting a soda, icecream that are already priced higher than normal anyway!!!! But Beth said it,,,to get as much out of us as possible!!!! (plus a waitress makes less than $3.00 an hour...which, yes is our choice!!!!) Just seems kind of "tacky" to have a tip jar at almost every service!!!!But hey,,,if people put money in,,,then it works....

I wish you worked at the ice cream place we frequent on the boardwalk, because I would tip if the service was excellent. :) Last weekend we stopped at our usual for ice cream and the girl at the counter was too busy talking to some guys who worked next door, to take our order. She ignored us until I said "excuse me" to the girl in the back and then she asked if she could help us, pretty sarcastically. My daughters wanted sprinkles and she acted as if it was a chore to do that. Thats when I saw the tip jar and thought "yeah right".

I started seeing tip jars in OC a few years back while at a Subway for lunch. I think it's kind of tacky and I DO feel like they are trying to squeeze every last penny out of me.

Another aspect to consider is that living in OC is really expensive compared to the other local Worcester county costs of living. I know we CHOSE to live here but it is tough to make ends met. I have a nice full time job, however the money only covers necessities like utilities, rent, transportation and groceries. I take the second job so that I can stick some money in a savings account and hopefully buy a house one day. Most young people in OC can only afford to live here if they end up bunking with 3 or more people!

A one bedroom, one bath year round condo in OC rents for $850-$1150 per month! plus utilities, security deposit and personal bills.

The resort nature of the town means we have to try and make the most during the summer season in order to afford to live here in the off season. Otherwise you would have to move twice a year, an even more costly en devour.

As OC becomes more and more of a year round resort town, hopefully the economy will level out and there wont be such a large price surge during summer seasons.
