Friday, June 13 - OC Police Arrest 58 In 12 Hours

OCEAN CITY – Senior week is in full swing this week, but you don’t have to tell that to the Ocean City Police Department (OCPD).

The streets of Ocean City were swarming this week with high school graduates celebrating their recent accomplishments. While some have been behaving and attending the planned Play It Safe events, others have been running afoul of the law and the Ocean City police have been busy keeping them in check.

The OCPD alone made a total of 58 arrests between the hours of 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 10 and 7 a.m. on Wednesday, June 11. Of those arrest, 20 were made by plain clothes officers working undercover on the Boardwalk and on municipal buses. According to an OCPD press release, nearly all the plain clothes arrests were made on the south end of the Boardwalk and charges included theft, strong armed robbery, public consumption, disorderly conduct and possession of CDS.

One notable incident of the night on Tuesday was a fight on the Boardwalk on 7th Street. Shortly after midnight on June 11, officers were dispatched to a fight in progress and arrived on the scene and attempted to arrest two subjects who were involved in the fight. A crowd of approximately 300 to 500 people surrounded the officers and would not back away, according to police reports. Additional manpower was called in to break up the crowd.

Once police swarmed, the crowd flocked north to 9th Street and another fight broke out and the crowd surrounded the officers again. For a second time, more officers were called in including K-9 and mounted patrol units to break up the crowd of teenagers and young adults and restore order. Three arrests were eventually made for disorderly conduct and fighting.

Throughout the night on Tuesday and early morning hours of Wednesday, 27 of the 58 individuals arrested were charged with drug possession. The remaining individuals were arrested for incidents such as disorderly conduct, malicious destruction of property, indecent exposure, public consumption and attempting to drive a vehicle under the influence of alcohol. A small number of arrests also came from charges of assault and theft.

Sixteen of the 58 arrested individuals were juveniles and 12 of the arrestees were female. Police reported the “overwhelming majority of victims and suspects were impaired by drugs and/or alcohol,” according to the OCPD press report.

This is to the point of being ridiculous. I am not an old prude by any stretch, I'm 26, so it was not that long ago that I was down in OC in June for Senior Week. However, I went down with my best friend from high school and made no trouble. No drinking, no fighting, no lewd behavior, just enjoying ourselves at the beach to celebrate the end of school and for my friend and I to enjoy time together before I went off to college and he went off into the work world. When we were down there, I actually did not like to venture out on the boardwalk at night because fellow graduates that were down there did not know how to act civilized and just plain made jackasses of themselves. It was better during the day when they were hung over and sleeping.

It is a shame that the OCPD has to put so much of its energy just to keep these animals in line, just think how much that is costing the taxpayers of OC. I think a solution to the monkey business on the boardwalk is to keep everyone (excluding responsible adults) moving along, no stopping and congregating, especially in large groups. Has the June senior weeks always been this bad? It just seems to me that young "adults" in many ways seem to have less respect and civility than those that have gone before them.

1960 began an era of domestic turbulence and change in the United States, the civil rights movement was commanding attention and civil unrest was erupting on campuses and in urban areas. Ocean City was not orderly immune. On the night of September 4, 1960, Ocean City had its first “riot.” Two thousand youths gathered outside the Ocean Casino on the Boardwalk at 9th Street to protest the arrest of a young Marine on a drunk and disorderly charge. They intended to march on the jail and release the prisoner. The OCPD requested additional manpower from the Worcester County Sheriff’s Department and the Maryland State Police. Using K-9 dogs and backed-up by the Ocean City Volunteer Fire Department and fire hoses, Police eventually dispersed the crowd. There was some property damage, and thirty-four of the protesters joined the Marine in jail. We've never had issues down there, I guess we've been fortunate. We have had some problems even camping at Assateague. Our problems have not been with the usual (stereotypical) suspects though. Our problems have come from the upper middle class, rich suburban white spoiled rotten kid crowd that generally congregate at the bath house. The rangers try to break up the groups but in reality, it's up to the parents. Parents who in today's world don't (never have) disciplined their children and would defend them to the death should their children ever do wrong and get caught. Worse case was when a young child was hit in the head with a rather large rock by a teenager out of control. One thing I will give the park credit for, they don't tolerate anything and this family was quickly removed from the park.

Sad to say, the problems I see in the OC News or on this forum are not limited to OC. Even in the city of Winchester, Virgina near where I live. You cannot go to our local mall on a Friday or Saturday night. The youth are totally out of control. Mall security won't deal with them and would rather harrass responsibile adults for standing in the common area talking while the teens are running wild destroying property. Welcome to the spawn of the "ME Generation".

Teens Arrested During Latest Boardwalk Robbery

OCEAN CITY – Three teens were arrested after striking and robbing a man on the Boardwalk last Friday in the latest case of what has become a disturbing trend this month.

Around 1 a.m. last Friday, OCPD officers responded to a reported robbery in progress on the Boardwalk around 23rd Street. The officers arrived to find the victim chasing three suspects. The officers gave chase on foot and eventually caught the three suspects and took them into custody.

The victim told police he was walking on the Boardwalk when one of the suspects approached him and asked if he wanted to buy drugs. The victim refused and walked away, but moments later, he was struck from behind and the three men grabbed his wallet and ran. OCPD officers caught the three suspects, identified as Duncan Spence, 18, of Annapolis; Jamar Patterson, 18, of Arnold; and Mitchell Matheson, 18, of Cordova.

Each of the suspects has been charged with robbery, second-degree assault and misdemeanor theft. Matheson was also charged with carrying a concealed deadly weapon after police found a butterfly knife in his pants pocket. Each of the three suspects is being held on $100,000 bonds.

The incident marked the 17th reported robbery in Ocean City since June 1. Over the past four years, there has been an average of 38 reported robberies annually. This year, a large number of both the victims and the suspects have been under the influence of alcohol. All of the victims and suspects have been between the ages of 17 and 26. Resort police have been able to solve nine of the 17 robberies to date.

I mean let's face it, how many real cops have you seen? A lot of them still have peach fuzz. I went during Senior Week two years ago and it was meaningless, harmless fistfight after fistfight outside our hotel on boardwalk and 3rd, all night beginning around 10:30 until we fell asleep on the balcony watching them, around 2am. The scenes described before match what we saw - orchestrated fights, some good, some ridiculous, but all surrounded by large groups (sometimes hundreds) of teenagers, many drunk. The police could not make their way through the crowd every time they were called, and by the time they got to the fight, it had ended, or others had gotten involved and the original instgators fled, except one time when they had to pull a guy out of a green dumpster.

My advice - if you want a peaceful time, don't go then! If you want to watch the teenage fight follies and the keystone cops, by all means get a room with a balcony. During the downtimes you just pop into the room and watch tv.
