Anyone here like Roses? I heard through the grapevine that after Roses lease is up, the owner is tearing down the entire 94th street mall, including Roses. Supposedly, they have a HUGE rat problem. Furthermore, heard that the owner of Goldcoast Mall is not renewing anyone's lease...(hmm, I wonder why). I can't imagine OC without Roses. Where else can you go to by nice, cheap things to decorate your condo with? What a crime! Business is business I suppose....
It doesn't surprise me if there is a rat problem. Roses is a dump inside! The place just looks filthy. It used to be much nicer years ago. I agree though, you can find some cheap decor that looks nice there.
As for Gold Coast Mall, I hope they stick around. I love the Donald's Duck Shop.
Agree-- Donalds duck shop is one of the nicest shops in town. I love the Wyland Paintings of the whales they have there--If only I had 5K to drop on one....
They were supposed to tear that mall down years ago. But for some reason, they left it up and Roses stayed open. Roses was trashy years ago and never improved.
As for the Gold Coast, I love going there. We always go to Three Brother's Pizza and Donald's Duck Shoppe. Plus, my shoe broke when we were in the mall, and I got shoes right there! Plus there's the movie theatre and Croc's for steaks. What will there be to do in OC aside from the beach and bars? And on a rainy day, heading to Rehobeth outlets is a death sentence sitting in traffic. Hope they change their minds or it's JUST a rumor.
The sooner they tear down the Ocean Plaza Mall, the better. I think that place is such an eyesore driving past there lately. I remember back in the day when the mall was full of merchants, but then a few years ago I went there for the last time and the mall was near deserted. I had read a while ago that there were plans to build condos on the site of the Ocean Plaza Mall, but who knows if that will happen in this soft market.
I would be disappointed if the Gold Coast Mall closes up, I enjoy the Donald's Duck Shoppe and window shopping at the Rolex watches at the jewelry store. Hopefully that is only a rumor...
I do agree that Roses could use a good cleaning, but I'd hate to see it go. We already lost the one in West Ocean City. It's a shame they can't take better care of the place because it is a good store.
As for the Ocean Plaza Mall, I used to love it when it was in its prime. They had a great Dollar Shop. I also liked Hazel's Books. But in the end, it just became an indoor flea market on weekends during the summer. I'm sure that property can be used in a better way. I'd like to see them keep Roses and Super Fresh, and maybe ad a restaurant. OC needs more condos like it needs a hurricane.
I do hope they keep the Gold Coast Mall. I go there at least once a year, and they still seem to do good business. It was great this past summer when we had an extremely hot and humid night. If the worst happens, I hope Donald's Duck Shoppe returns in another location. I do miss Best Buns on the Beach. Best sticky buns ever.
I absolutely love Roses! :DI agree about the "clean up", but most of those places are alike. As far as tearing down the Gold Coast Mall...I say Boooooooooooooooooo. :p We love just hanging out there when we are waiting to check into our condo. We usually have a few hours between check ins from one place to another. Yes some of their shops can be a little pricey, but again, I've read this in so many threads...you get what you pay for. I love the Duck, and will miss it. They have the most lovely items.:(
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they recently spend some money to redo the exterior of Gold Coast Mall?
As for Roses, if they just hire a janitor, they'll be ok. I like going there because, until recently, you could get postcards from the 1980s. No kidding. About three or four years ago, I got some OC postcards that had to be from the late 80s...early 90s at the most recent.
But seriously, I do like Rose's. I miss the one on Route 50. Did we really need a Staples there?
Perhaps, Staples is good for the business owners, but the property that used to be the Ocean Plaza Mall would've been a good location too.
It'll be interesting to see what happens to that spot. God knows they don't really need anymore condos right now. There's already a Sunsations and Candy Kitchen near there.
Personally, I'd like to be some sort of indoor activity put there. Without the mall, there is one less thing to do on a rainy day.
I think a pool hall would be a great idea. There used to be one called Gentleman Jim's off the Boardwalk.
They could build an indoor condo with go kart access, miniature golf and a huge Candy Kitchen Warehouse Outlet Store, power it with 40 story tall wind generators and we're home free. Make sure that there is plenty of parking off street and a Dough Roller Carry Out wouldn't hurt. Also, a T-Shirt Factory wouldn't be a bad idea either.

NOW YOUR THINKING!!!! All you have to do now is to remember to leave room for one of those Henna Tattoo places, and you've got me sold!:D:D:D
I want Fisher's Popcorn! Ooh, and I want to be able to shoot water into the mouth of a clown and blow up a balloon till it pops. That way I can win a tiny stuffed Elmo made in Taiwan!
I know this isn't in Ocean City but it shocked me the other week when I heard news that a new Roses has opened up in Salisbury. I have not been to check it out yet but I'm sure it will not have the beach decorations that the Ocean City one did.

I'm going to OC this weekend. I hope Roses is still open. It feels like you step back into the 80's. Can't beat the price. Can anyone tell me please?
Is it still open?

There's no mess so big that it can't be, and shouldn't be cleaned up....
Health dept. anyone?

For those of us who live in the OC area year round, YES, having a Staples over that crappy Roses is very nice in my opinion.
I'm sure many local small business owners were extremely happy with the change as well.
You can get all the same things that Rose's had at Wal-mart 3 miles further west on Rt. 50 without feeling like you just walked into a disaster zone.

Have you been inside yet?
