I just got off the phone with the Ramada Inn Convention Center and was informed that the dates I wanted to reserve were not available because they are closing permanently on Oct.8th of this year. Not because they are changing hands, but because it's being torn down for condos.........again! I can tell you right now that it's really getting difficult to get a hotel room (reasonable rates) in OC. Guess it's going to be condos or nothing in OC in the future.

There is the nicest black lady who does the breakfast buffet there and has worked there for as long as I can remember. We had such a good time talking to her every morning. She was employee of the month one time when we were there and we congratulated her. You would have thought she won the lottery. I think she really enjoyed her job. I sure hope she finds work somewhere else.

Actually the hotel isn't going to be torn down. The existing hotel rooms are going to be turned into condominium units. One room on the top floor has already been converted and is now serving as a model unit. For more information, please feel free to visit www.makaicondos.com .

Don't fret too much!

Not all buildings are turning into condos. Since the flooding of the market in OC, many OC committees are encourgaing more newer hotels.

A new hotel is going up on 123rd Street at the old Wendy's after being turned down for more condos.

A popular building on 15th street was going to be condos called the Mirimar (my sister was supposed to purchase one) and now it will be a new hotel as well. I believe it is supposed to hold the "new" Captains Table restaurant.

Definably is going to be harder to get a new building approved for condos if the OC committees have any say in it.

On the down side here are two more soon-to-be condo buildings.

They are tearing down the Old and out-dated OC tennis and raquet club to build condos and install a nice new Bailey's Total Fitness.

The old misty Harbor mobile home park has been torn down and is moving forward to condos...but less than half will be owner-owned condos. Majority will be vacation condos, so thats not too bad I guess!

The new hotel on 123rd Street is going to be a Hampton Inn.

The Makai Condos project, converting the Ramada, appears to be aimed at the vacation rental market. I believe I was the fourth person to put in a "reservation" and will be using one of the efficiency units primarily as a rental. The units are being sold nearly "turnkey," complete with furniture and even pots, pans and dishes. All that will be needed is the installation of a TV and sheets and towels.

We are hoping it sees a lot vacationers because it is currently a popular place, it is close to the Convention Center, and will maintain the ammenities of the current building and add a couple more. We will most likely rent our unit through Long & Foster - full week, mini-week, and weekend packages.

The construction is taking the old Ramada back to concrete and steel and building everything else brand new. Even the efficiency units (realistically a converted hotel room) will have full kitchens with granite counters, fully tiled bathrooms and washer/dryer units. (Not too many hotels offer a washer/dryer.)

So, for folks who like to stay at the current Ramada, you may like renting in the "new" place even more. We are hoping so, anyway. (And I have the advantage of being able to advertise the place at no cost.)

:)

How ironic. The Ramada Convention Center used to be a Hampton. I'm glad because I like the Hampton Inns.
And OCthebeach.com, will you only be renting weeks or short stays for festivals etc?

The Hampton will be in a good location; between a McDonalds and Dumpsers Dairyland Restaurant, so you will have a choice of (expensive) fast food or an inexpensive, but very good meal. The hotel will only be 1 1/2 blocks from the beach and a couple blocks from Northside Park - and should prove to be a nice place for families.

Concerning the Ramada--->Makai Condo: We are looking at a proposal from Long & Foster Rentals which shows weekly, mini-week, and weekend rentals - depending on the season and what is going on at the Convention Center. Most likely I will use them as rental agents. I also hope to be very flexible - and would rather see the place used for a couple of days than (possibly) sit empty for a whole week.

:)

Just a reminder that as of yesterday (October 8, 2006), the Ramada Limited is now closed for business.
