Whats wrong with timeshares, and why don't you want information about them here.
NO POSTINGS ABOUT TIME SHARES
Timeshares are not the same as going thru a rental agent to obtain a site unseen, prepaid in full beforehand, condo.
I would suggest getting a condo directly from the owner via a website like this one: Oceancity.com and look for vacation rentals. Forget using the agencies in town. They are merely rental pimps.
I see this thread is pretty old- but I'll throw in my 2 cents.
With the advent of the Internet, there are tons of Owner-arranged condo sites on the Internet- We own a condo, and we rent to help with the payments since we aren't independantly wealthy ourselves- and I tried renting with Holiday Real Estate the first year- and they are truly out for themselves- they charge the owners all kinds of administrative fees, and their customer service SUCKS (pardon the language) for owners AND rentors.
I totally agree with going with the Owner-controlled renter sites like:
greatrentals.com
FindVacationRentals.com
vacationrentals.com
vrbo.com
http://cyberrentals.com/
I advertise with 2 of them, and I think it's a much better way to do business with the people that rent from us- I like communicating with the people since Holiday never really did any sort of screening anyway (we try to rent to families only, but we will rent to others if they show that they will respect our "beachouse", and are not just coming down for a party.
All of these sites have lots of OC MD properties available- and you communicate direclty with the owners on the terms- Most of them will still require payment in advance (there are a lot of un-trustworthy scammers out there), but I keep in constant communication with my renters before, during (if necessary), and after vacations- I want them to enjoy our place as much as we do- so we try to make them feel as welcome as possible with many personal touches.
Let's have no postings about time shares as someone suggested.
I wanted this topic so others could share their experiences about renting condos in Ocean City.
All condos are not created equal! Mostly we've had good experiences renting condo's. One of the most disturbing things is the new trend of complete payment before arrival and what a monoply of the entire system of renting a condo. All realtors are the same; requiring the same prepayment; the same security deposits, etc. I have been going to Ocean City since I was a child (50 years ago) and what a money hungry place it has turned into. I guess I really shouldn't be surprised. I do still love OC!
I wish there was a way to contact the owners of some of the condos I've rented to tell them how the realtors are handling their units.
