Not that this is really all that news worthy, but 9 years ago when we visited OC and my wife was 9 months pregnant, she was craving Coke like crazy, and every where you turned it was Pepsi... like I said not really news worthy, but where she's concerned this was about 9 years too late. =)
OCEAN CITY – Coca-Cola fans will be pleased to hear that the company outbid Pepsi and will be taking over the title of Ocean City’s official soft drink.
During Tuesday afternoon’s Mayor and City Council meeting, Council President Jim Hall announced that Coca-Cola has won the bid for Ocean City’s five-year beverage franchise.
“Coca-Cola will be taking over the town of Ocean City,” he said.
Pepsi Bottling Ventures has held the town’s beverage franchise for the last 10 years.
Coca-Cola’s contract will take effect April 2 leaving April 1 the last day for Pepsi to remove all vending machines and equipment from town-owned properties.

One's the same as the other. I prefer Coke, but if I drink Pepsi I just add a lemon wedge. No biggie.

Are you serious? I haven't drank any soda in about 2 years, but before that if it wasn't Coca Cola, I'd pass on it all together... Maybe it's just my pallette, but I think there's a big difference when it comes to the taste.
All taste good with rum in it!!
But personally, I like Coke.
Coke has more kick but I'm a Dr. Pepper fan myself.
Now Ocean City is perfect!

No arguement here. I would never deliberately go to a store and buy Pepsi. I don't like it. But my husband is diabetic and we buy Diet/Caffiene Free Coke. Someone told me years ago when I was complaining about the taste of Pepsi products that if you put a lemon wedge in it, it kills that awful after taste of Pepsi. We tried it, and it works! So when we're in a restaurant and we have no choice other than Pepsi we order it with a lemon wedge. Try it yourself. I think you'll be surprised!
Hmm... I wonder if this will have any impact on the Dew Tour returning (Mountain Dew is owned by Pepsi). Probably not, but stranger things have happened.

Never really gave that much thought, but it's an interesting question.
Z, I've never tried it but, my mother puts the lemon in pepsi for that very reason.
"The agreement will replace the current contract held by Pepsi Bottling Ventures.
Mountain Dew, a Pepsi product, will still be served at the Summer Dew Tour stop in town, since it is a private event, Abbott said."
FD HIDDEN DIV
FD HIDDEN DIVMeh, it was news when OC went with Pepsi and offered the town over $1 million for a 5 year deal. I guess Pepsi thought they didn't see the returns of their investment and Coke thought they lost something...........but still won this time with less then Pepsi paid 10 years ago. I always thought it was odd the town went with Pepsi in the first place, personnally I have no preference with one over the other.
I will agree it is kinda a slap in the face to the Dew Tour that has committed to another year. I wonder if we will see them in 2013.
Well crap. I don't drink soda anymore as it causes severe abdominal pain in me. Coke is worse (Dr. said it's because of the carbonation in it) but where this screws me is the Iced Tea. I generally buy several bottles of Lipton Brisk tea while in the inlet and on the boardwalk. I can't drink Nestea without it making me feel sick. Guess, I'm bringing my own Turkey Hill bottled tea from now on. :(
It's not like it used to be though. Back in the 80's, whoever had the soda contract OWNED the city!!! If it was Coke, you couldn't find Pepsi anywhere, and vice versa. It's gotten better over the years, but I remember when you couldn't even buy Pepsi in a 7-Eleven when Coke had the city contract.
I never knew there was a contract for Coke or Pepsi. If given a choice I always pick Pepsi, although I'll drink either. I guess the big Pepsi sign on the Ferris Wheel at the Inlet will get changed to Coke now. I'm happy with either as long as I'm on vacation :o)
I would pick pepsi over coke but I drink them both. Especially since there is a rewards program with coke. Lots of neat stuff you can get. I've never heard of the lemon wedge fix. Might get a couple lemons at the grocery store today.
So besides the machines on the boardwalk and streets, What exactly does this mean? I do love coke though!!! although prefer beer when in OC.
I don't know any details of the deal beyond what's been in the press, but as a Diet Coke drinker I always noted that the vast majority of restaurants in OC are Pepsi establishments. I often wondered if the deal with the city also included some preferred pricing or free advertising for local places that sell Pepsi. It will be interesting to see if many such places swap from Pepsi to Coke.
BTW, there was at least one set of Coke machines on the boardwalk. They're next to the Dumser's on the east side of the boardwalk at the inlet parking lot. I always assumed that area must not have been owned or controlled by the city. I think there are some Pepsi machines there too. It will be interesting to see if the machines all swap out there.
There are some people on this forum who work with the restaurant industry. Perhaps they can provide some insight into the impact of this change beyond the vending machines on public property.
I have a couple questions for anyone who might be "in the know."
1. The impression I got from reading this was that the Coke machines will be in place by April 2 and Pepsi has March 31, 2012 and April 1, 2012 to remove their machines. If that is correct, then I think its going to be a crazy couple days in OC with machines being transitioned in and out. Is my impression of this transition accurate?
2. From what I can remember, all the restaurants in the city will have to change their soda as well. If that is true, then won't all the soda fountains have to change too? Or do they just have to change the syrup tanks and the signs on their soda fountains?
Who cares........ Pepsi or Coke so what.... 99% of the people couldn't tell the difference. Go to the store and buy what you want!!
Coke has the exclusive at city owned properties (example: Convention Center) and town sponsored events (Sunfest, Springfest, etc). Individual restaurants are still free to offer which ever product they want, just as you are still able to find some places in town serving Coca-Cola products today. I am not sure how this impacts vending machines such as those on the boardwalk, I would suspect only those machines owned by the town will get changed out and have no idea how many the town actually owns outside of those in/on city property.
I had no idea that they made deals for a whole town. I have always been a Diet Coke lady (with lots of lemon), but I don't have a problem drinking Diet Pepsi (again, with lots of lemon). After all these years I don't think it ever even occured to me that I was drinking more Pepsi during our stays. Now if someome would mess with my vacation mimosas, I'm sure I would have a problem with that!
As long as I can still get my unsweetened iced tea at the Atlantic Stand and my kids can get their Birch Beer at Dough Roller, we're good. It will be interesting though because we've come to associate Pepsi with Thrashers. Wonder if that will change.
So much better then Pepsi
But I thought they just painted the water tower with Mt. Dew
The tower states " Welcome to Ocean City Maryland, home of the Mellow Yellow Tour, wait, Dew Tour"

I wish they don't put any advertising on the ferris wheel, it makes me sad
Will this affect the dew tour weekend?
wile i love coke i feel like it is s much sweeter that pepsi. usually onlydrink it when i am craving it!

For the record : I find it ironic, that Whittney Houston took all the money she made from Pepsi, and spent it on Coke........... What? too soon??

Didn't want to double post. lol
I seem to remember back when Coca Cola was the official soft drink of Ocean City that a lot of the restaurants still serves Pepsi products. I think it was just the vending machines on the Boardwalk that were mostly Coke.
Personally, I was hoping RC Cola win out.
