After the horrible tragedy in Minneappolis, is anyone concerned about the safety of the Bay Bridge? I hate crossing that thing because I'm terrified of heights and my mind always worries about the bridge collapsing and drowning. (crazy, I know). But with as many boats as pass under it, and I'm sure that not only boats, but debris, probably collide with the supports daily, and all of the vibrations from vehicles on top, don't you wonder just how secure and safe we really are? I can't believe that all the rivets and welds don't suffer from all the strain and daily vibrations. Anyone else worry about it or know what safety proceedures are done there?

Man, if the Chesapeake Bay Bridge collapses, you won't have to worry about drowning :) I think the impact alone will kill you...

I don't think any of the small pleasure boats would affect the strength of the supports- and we'd know if one of the giant cargo boats ran into something...

They just re-did the whole bridge the last 2 years- I'm sure it will hold up for at least 10 more....

I hope you are right. We are on our way to OC Monday and my wife is a little scared.

Oh man....We are leaving for a week in OC on 8/11 and until I saw this thread I hadn't even thought about the bay bridge falling.
I am not that thrilled to cross it on a good day but now...........

I know there is an alternate route where you don't have to cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. My aunt was terrifed of that bridge and always went a different way--not sure what the route is, but I'm sure someone out there does. Any suggestions?

Oh my I can't believe all this hysteria!

What people fail to realize is that your chances of getting killed because the bridge you are driving across collapses is so remote it's not even worth worrying about. Yet, about 130 or so of our fellow Americans are killed EVERY DAY just driving automobiles under normal circumstances. If you are that worried, then don't even get in your car and drive to OC! For that matter, don't drive your car at all!

Or if you are brave enough and survive the drive, then by no means should you get in the ocean! Your chances of drowning in the ocean I am sure are 100's of times greater than dying from the bridge you are driving across collapsing. Don't forget about lightning too! Oh... and bee stings and shark attacks. Heaven forbid you decide to rent and ride a bike while vacationing in OC or any where for that matter! And don't even think about walking down a set of stairs or taking a bath! Your chances of slipping and falling and dying are much higher than being killed because the bridge you are driving across collapses. GOOD GRIEF!

There isn't any! If you go north and take the Delaware route, then you have to cross the C&D canal ON A BRIDGE at some point.

Going south and coming up from the VA Beach/Newport News/Norfolk area means having to take the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel...Oh my, now we have tunnels to worry about as well. At least you only have about 25 feet to fall if the bridge portion collapses!

I know a lot of people get nervous driving across the Bay Bridge. Instead of driving all the way around the Bay, here's a suggestion that I think will make the Bridge seem easier to drive:

Go across the bridge at night. When you go across during the light of day, you can see the water and just how high up you are. If you go at night, it honestly seems like a normal road.

That's my suggestion.

If not, there's a service that'll drive your car across the bridge for you.

Hope this helps.

Mink--people are afraid of that bridge, is that ok with you? Can they make a comment about it without being bitch slapped by you?? Can anyone make a comment about anything at all without you responding in your derogatory manner???:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes: Waiting for the come back, because I KNOW there will be one.

Thank you for that response. Mink's scolding was very inappropriate. An apology is in order.

We are leaving Sunday to go to OC and I will be praying all the way across the Bay Bridge but then again I always do that when we cross it. LOL :)
