A crabby conspiracy theory?
Wednesday, October 31st, 2007If you live near the eastern shore and are a fan of seafood, you’ve probably heard at least one news report saying that crabs with old bay can kill you! Apparently it all started when a hardcore crab eater from MD found that the high salt levels in Old Bay seasoning were aggravating her Meniere’s Disease, an inner ear condition that can cause vertigo and lack of balance. Local media have been all over the case because, honestly, health scares sell papers. Can a hearty Maryland meal of crabs with Old Bay be bad for you? Well, yes, if you’re eating them every day. But the fact of the matter is, it isn’t the crabs that are linked to the illness, or the distinctive blend of spices in Old Bay — just the seasoning’s high salt content.
So what our wonderful local media have come up with is… eating a lot of salt is bad for you. Thank you, intrepid reporters!
